American gymnast Gabrielle Douglas made a bold decision three years ago. The teenager moved away from her family in the US state of Virginia, and took up residence in Iowa. She was only 13 years old, and thought her best chance to excel would come from attending the exclusive gymnastics academy run by Chinese coach Liang Chow. Douglas had a chance to justify that decision in the women's all-around gymnastics final in London on Thursday.

Douglas started turning heads when she beat world champion Jordyn Wieber at the U-S championships.

The 16-year-old ranked third in the qualifications for the Olympics all-around.

And Douglas made a solid start in the final. She was in front from the first apparatus, the vault, and never looked back.

She made history as the first African-American woman to win an all-around gymnastics gold.

Russians Victoria Komova and Aliya Mustafina took silver and bronze.
