A weakened Fluminense, without Deco or Fred, still managed a 1-0 win over Sport Recife in the Brasilian league on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro. It was a game with plenty of chances as Samuel Rosa comes close with a header just 10 minutes in.

The symbol of wisdom, an owl, landed on the goalposts and hung around the ground until the final whistle.

The home side took it as an omen and continued to create chances: Wagner was wasteful after being put through in the 23rd minute and Thiago Carleto should have at least hit the target in the 37th.

The second half got off to a thrilling start with Wagner’s 48th minute header forcing a good save from Magrao and Fluminense is denied the lead again.

A Second yellow card has Sport Recife’s Tobi seeing red after going in a little too hard on the slide.

Then in the 83rd minute, Fluminense achieves what they’d threatened to all game - Samuel Rosa volleys in Carlinhos’ cross to make it 1-0. An unconvincing display but enough to earn victory for Fluminense. Sitting level on points and goal difference with Atletico Mineiro, Fluminense are equal second on the ladder.
