The first week of the new English Premier League season came to a close on Monday. With Manchester United and new signing Robin van Persie travelling to Liverpool to take on Everton to kick off their season.

Manchester United came so-close to capturing the English title last year, only to lose it on goal differential to rival Man City on the final day of the season. United, hoping van Persie could be the difference-maker they need this season as they aim to return to the top of the English table.

However, first things first and that was to handle the challenge of Everton who created the majority of the early in chances in front of a noisy Goodison Park crowd. United goalkeeper David De Gea had to be at his best in the first half as he made a number of quality saves to keep Everton at bay.

The best chance for Man U came off the foot of Wayne Rooney but his shot, was easily turned aside by rock-solid Everton keeper Tim Howard.

The most dangerous player for Everton seemed to be Marouane Fellaini who was doing his best to free up his side’s strikers as Everton seemed to be more likely to break the scoreless deadlock. And in the 57th minute, the Belgian rose to meet Leighton Baines’ corner and the header by Fellaini found the back of the net to make it 1-nil Everton.

Looking to spark his offense.Sir Alex Ferguson sent on the Premier League’s reigning scoring champ with Robin van Persie making his debut official, coming off the bench in the 68th minute.

However, Everton would hold firm and hold on for a deserved 1-nil win, spoiling van Persie’s first game with United while the Liverpool side get their campaign off to a great start.
