While paralympians have been shining in London over the past couple of weeks, a group of 2008 Sichuan earthquake survivors are competing in their own sports meet in the city of Chengdu. Some of them come a long and hard way towards the stadium.

Another emphatic jump for Wu Xin. The former basketball player had desperately struggled to survive the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. But that was just the beginning and there was more hardships to overcome.

Wu Xin, a disabled athlete, said, “On one hand, the earthquake took away my leg and hit me hard, both physically and mentally. On the other hand, it has forced me to think more about my life and take a more rational view of it.”

Though his injuries were crushing, Wu Xin was lucky. He was one of the 18 survivors out of a class of 64.

Wu says that when he was buried under the fallen walls, all he wanted was to survive and play basketball again.

The new objective of his life might be way high, but never slows him down.

Wu Xin said, “Doctors told me that one of my legs had to be amputated to save my life. I had no choice. There is always a hope if you are alive.”

With prosthetics and a stick, Wu Xin can now walk again to the podium to receive his gold medal. And the 22-year-old is reaping more in life, including a letter of admission to college. The young man said with all that he has been through, he has learnt to stand more firmly on his own feet.
