Kelly Slater makes history with 50th ASP World Tour victory

Eleven times world champion Kelly Slater is a phenomenon, not only was he the youngest ever World Surfing Champion two decades ago, but last year he became its oldest and then this week he won his 50th title on the ASP World Tour, the Hurley Pro in California.

Slater outdueled Australian Joel Parkinson in the two man final in three to five foot surf at Lower Trestles beach in California. For the 40-year-old Slater, the Hurley Pro was an appropriate place to win his 50th as his first professional win came at this event twenty years ago.

Slater also holds the record for most ASP World Championships after claiming his 11th last year and with the win at Lower Trestles is now in position to fight for a twelfth. With four more events remaining in the season Slater is third place in the overall standings behind Parkinson and leader Mick Fanning of Australia.
