Guangzhou Fuli hosted Dalian Aerbin in the Chinese Super League on Sunday. Guangzhou sat in fifth with three points behind third-placed Beijing. A win could see Fuli move into the top three on goal difference and grab the final qualifying position for next year’s AFC Champions League.

Fuli needed three points to stay in the driver’s seat of the Champions League spot. But they fell behind after only six minutes. Fabio Rochemback found Liu Yu on the left. Liu beat the keeper with a perfect lob. It was 1-0. Dalian was in control.

Guangzhou pushed for an equalizer, but their hopes of comeback were dashed in the 62nd minute. Rochemback struck on the edge of the box. It was 2-0. Fuli pulled one back in the 72nd minute. Liang Yanfeng found the back of the net with a free-kick. 2-1. But it appeared to be a consolation goal as Dalian cruised to a 2-1 victory.

On the standings, Marcello Lippi’s Guangzhou Evergrande remains on top with a 3-point lead over Jiangsu Sainty. The title is still up for grabs with two rounds left. Beijing is in third, followed by Guizhou and Fuli. Shanghai Shenhua lies on ninth.
