After a raging debate in the Spanish capital over Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho’s refusal to give the club’s young players opportunities, the team found themselves in the obscure surroundings of Alcoy for a Copa Del Rey match. So Mourinho chose to rest virtually his entire starting XI, giving an opportunity for some of the younger members of Real Madrid’s reserve team.

Real opened the scoring when French striker Karim Benzema headed past goalkeeper Unai Alba after 21 minutes.

Before the interval, Kaka made it 2-0 when his shot from just outside the area slipped past Alba.

As if to highlight this week’s big issue for Real, 17-year-old Jose Rodruigez made it 3-0 in the 67th minute with a well placed finish.

Unfazed, the home team kept pushing for a goal and they were finally rewarded when Javi Lara’s set piece got past Real goalkeeper Adan without anyone getting a touch on it.

With just two minutes left in the game Benzema scored his second of the night to make it a 4-1 victory. The second leg of the tie will be played on the 27th of November.
