Ulsan Hyundai beat Al-Ahli to win AFC Champions League title

Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea hosted Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli in the final at the Ulsan Munsu Stadium on Saturday.

The South Koreans were heavy favourites at home to an injury and suspension depleted Al-Ahli side.

13 minutes into the game, skipper Kwak Tae-hwi headed home teammate’s free kick to make it 1-0 for Ulsan.

The Saudi club nearly leveled in the 63rd minute. Al-Sahbi’s acrobatic effort whistled over the crossbar.

Four minutes later, Brazilian Rafinha doubled the Ulsan lead. 2-0, thanks to some collective effort.

The hosts made it three in the 75th minute when Kim Seung-yong gleefully blasted the ball home.

Al-Ahli had a final chance for a goal in stoppage time, but they sqaundered the opportunity.

So Ulsan Hyundai defeated Al-Ahli 3-0 to win the 2012 AFC Champions League, completing an unbeaten run to its maiden continental title. Ulsan are the fourth from South Korea to lift the trophy and will now represent the Asian Football Confederation at the FIFA Club World Cup next month in Japan.

Kim Ho Gon, Ulsan head coach, says, "We are pleased to be playing in the FIFA Club World Cup after being champions of Asia. We have to do well and continue to perform to the best of our abilities. This is also a good opportunities for our players to play with some of the top teams in Asia.

I am confident we can show the world our brand of football. Overall, I am pleased with this victory in the AFC Champions League and our target is go as far as we can in the Club World Cup."
