Ye Shiwen misses out on a medal

07-30-2013 16:16 BJT

China’s Olympic Champion Ye Shiwen was aiming to defend her 200 meter individual medley title. But it was Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu who produced the biggest surprise, winning in the end by a mile.

Ye shocked the swimming world in London when the then-16-year-old took the golds in both the 200m and 400m individual medleys. But the young swimmer has struggled with her weight since then.

Hosszu finished nearly 7 seconds behind Ye in this event in 2012. But the Hungarian was in spectacular form here. But she didn’t even enter the backstroke semifinals, in order to concentrate on this, her favoured event.

And that decision seemed to pay off. Hosszu taking the lead early on. Here she is at the half way point at the end of the backstroke, leading Ye by several feet.

Ye was struggling to keep pace from the very start, and was even in last place at the final turn.

Meanwhile Hosszu continued to dominate in the final 50 meters and cruised to the wall one and a half seconds ahead of the rest of the field, winning the gold by a mile in two minutes and 07.92 seconds.

Australia’s Alicia Coutts was second, and Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia third. But bad news for China, as Ye finished outside the medals in fourth.

"I felt nervous even in the afternoon before the competition. I don’t know why. Maybe I had too many races. My opponent is in incredible form, and she did very well in the heats and semifinals. So it was very hard for me to stay calm. The pool is very cold, as a result, I didn’t feel very good from the beginning of the race." Ye Shiwen said.
