Ecuadorian striker Christian Benitez has passed away at the age of 27. The forward died following a game in Qatar.

The player was sent to hospital after complaining of stomach pains after making his debut during El Jaish’s 2-0 win against Qatar Sports Club. He would later suffer a "cardio-respiratory arrest" and died a few hours later. The game was played in hot conditions typical of the area this time of year.

Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup and the searing heat has prompted many to call for the tournament to be moved to the winter.

Benitez, won 58 caps for Ecuador and spent the 2009-10 season on loan at Birmingham City. The British club will mark the player’s death ahead of Saturday’s match against Watford.
