Team China wins 2nd group stage opener

08-06-2013 10:26 BJT

The Second Stage of Group Play has gotten underway. The teams were reseeded after the first three games, and moved into different pools for this round. China’s opener against Kazakhstan came down to the wire, before they finally won by a score of 73 to 67.

With Yi Jianlian already out of action, the last thing China wanted was another injury, but that’s what happened in the first quarter when point guard Liu Xiaoyu got hurt driving to the basket.

His teammates managed to compose themselves after he was taken off the court, but the momentum went back and forth, with the Kazakhs giving the defending champions all they could handle.

China finally asserted themselves under the basket to get some breathing room in the fourth quarter, Wang Zhizhi in the middle of everything down low, and that helps them pick up a crucial victory.
