12-20-2013 08:35 BJT

The Pittsburgh Penguins were trying to extend their lead atop the Metropolitan Division when the visited the New York Rangers, a team that needed a win just to get back to the .500 mark. The hosts would throw everything they had at the division leaders, an attitude that would stretch Wednesday night’s action all the way into a shootout.

The Blueshirts looking to make their visitors feel most unwelcome at Madison Square Garden, But the Penguins lead 2-to-1 in the third period, when Brandon Sutter decides that he can beat two defenders plus the goaltender, and guess what He can. That effort puts the Iron City Crew ahead by a score of 3-to-1.

But the Rangers aren’t about to roll over on their own ice. So six minutes later, John Moore brings the puck all the way down for a high slapshot that’s finished off by Mats Zuccarello  Netminder caught looking the other way, and just like that, New York cuts the deficit to 3-to-2.

A Pittsburgh penalty leads to a power play with about two minutes left on the clock, but Benoit Pouliot’s rocket shot bounces off the endboards. Derick Brassard there for the rebound, however, and the Blueshirts come all the way back to tie the score at three goals apiece.

Nobody finds the back of the net in overtime, so that brings up a shootout. Round Five here, and it’s Sutter facing Henrik Lundquist. The Penguin skater with a low wrist-shot right through the goaltender’s legs, and Pittsburgh gets the win by a final score of 4-to-3.
