Video: Interviewing Yu Zhengsheng Part 1: What's the significance of the Shanghai Expo?

08-10-2010 15:12 BJT

Q1: Expo 2010 Shanghai is the first world's fair to be held in China, and it features the largest number of countries, cities, and international organizations ever in world fair history. What is the significance of the Expo to be held in Shanghai? and why is the world surpporting it so strongly?

A: 200 years ago, only about 2% of the world's population lived in cities; now it's more than half. The rate of urbanlization is increasing even faster in the developing countries. How to make the city more habitable? How to reduce the harm that city life has on the environment? These are global issues. Hence the appeal of the Expo's theme. Shanghai is the largest city in China. So how Shanghai develops while reducing environmental harm and global warming is a major issue. The Shanghai Expo has boosted Shanghai's infrastructure construction: We've expanded the subway to over 400km. Were it not for the Expo, we wouldn't have had the resolve to do this.
