Is It True, the first talk-show-style variety show in China produced with the cooperation between CCTV-2 and Enlight Media, which is created to verify between false and truth. The show started in April on CCTV-2 and gained hot favor from the audience with a stable No. 1 viewing rate among all the programs released on the CCTV-2.
The show invites Joe Wong, a stand-up Chinese American comedian as the special guest, and Chen Beibei, a good-looking hostess with CCTV, as a super tester, to verify between the false and truth within a one-minute on-the-spot experiment. It is an explicit and shocking style for its audience, combining news verifying and talk show. It adopts a relaxing and humorous way rather than the stereotyped way of investigation on news information to comment on the current hotspots and separate false from truth. A professional team works on the investigation about the events, either true or false, which the consumers most concerns about. Their investigation is committed to reveal the businesses violating the commercial morals. This is the first show of its kind.
The show is an example of a close linkage between TV and internet. Both TV audience and netizens are considered. The most concerned gossips flowing on the internet are selected each week and are investigated for verification so that the audience will have a chance to get to know the true story. Each period of the show includes such parts as Joe Wong’s talk show, internet gossip verification, on-the-spot verification by experiment, talk show “I believe, Joe Wong”, key investigative top selection, “Joe Wong Has the Answer” and etc. It is a vocative show joining news investigation, entertainment and talk show to tell the most serious incident in a humorous way.
Joe Wong: starts his road toward talk show champion from an overseas student in America
Joe Wong, got his degree of MS from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ph. D on biochemistry from Rice University in Texas, may never have expected to enter the talk show circle in America and gained fame for himself. He was invited to join the LateShowwithDavidLetterman in 2009, which is reputed as “Comedy Oscar”, and his excellent comedian performance won the applauses of the American audience and made him a big name as “Yao Ming in Comedy”. Yet the very performance that made him known by the Chinese is the one in the White House, in which Wong “joked” with the American President and won the standing-up applauses of the 2,400 audiences from the politic and press circles. Joe Wong published his book TheTaoofHumor: An Autobiography by Joe in the end of 2011. He also shows himself in the concentrated period in other interviewing talk shows such as Cui’s Interview, Date with Lu Yu and Seeing by Chai Jing, which have made him known by more in Chinese mainland thanks also to his own ability to making people laugh. His joining to the CCTV shows Is It True offers him a larger stage to show his comedian talent. Sometimes being deeply emotive and sometimes humorous, Wong features most of the show.
