Moving round Mount Kailash: blissful pilgrims weather hardships

08-02-2013 16:43 BJT

Mount Kailash, known as Mount Kangrinpoche by Chinese, is the highest peak of the Gangdise Mountain range with an altitude of 6,656 meters.

Lying in Pulan County, Nagri Prefecture of Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, Mount Kailash and Lake Mapham Yutso are considered as the sacred places by four religions: Tibetan Buddhism, Bon Religion, Hinduism and Jainism.

On the winding mountain path to a higher altitude, people are making their way slowly through the burning sunlight. Some crawl strenuously, while some teeter slowly with rigid facial complexion. The should-be grand pilgrimage team looks like some sandy soil flaked along the long and narrow valleys. Standing on the river bank and looking up at the sky-line peaks, people will feel so small as to be overlooked in the vast universe.

A caravan of Indian pilgrims wanders downwards after a half day's worship to the holy mountain started from early in the morning. Many of them have high altitude reaction and fall ill. One has already been sick in a coma, as if breathing the last gasp while carried by several poters waiting for rescue in the rim part of the team.

Every year, flocks of Indian pilgrims arrive here to worship the sacred mountain and lake. Some of them are Hindus from India.

It's been a long history for Indian pilgrims to worship Mount Kailash, which links the man and the Buddha and communicates between Indian people and their God Brahma or Shiva (which is believed to be the ruler of this world and a trinity god of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva). As the passage between the man's world and the world of Buddha, Mount Kangrinpoche is venerated in Hinduism as paradise of the supreme almighty god of destruction, Shiva. Jainism regards it as the highest mountain where their founder reaches Nirvana.

Kangrinpoche buries immortal spiritual legacy of various beliefs and appealing miracles, which might not be eye-witnessed but can reach the innermost of man, attracting millions upon millions of pilgrims for thousand years.

For Indian pilgrims, it will be extremely difficult to overcome the three "tortures" of high mountains, dangerous roads and high altitude reaction without a tenacious spirit of "I would risk my life to march on as long as God let me breathe".

These Indian pilgrims, however, are lucky. Many Indian religious followers cannot afford the trip to worship holy mountains from a long distance even with a lifetime saving. What they could do is to pray and worship in the direction of the holy mountains.
