Libya rebels battle gov't forces for refinery

08-18-2011 08:41 BJT

Libya's rebel forces have recently captured some of the key townships in the west and south, cutting off supplies into the capital Tripoli from the two directions. Despite the advances, part of the oil-rich towns of Brega and Zawiyah are still under government control.

The rebels have claimed control over most of Zawiyah, which supplies oil and gas to the capital.

They are now trying to cut off the road from Tripoli to neighboring Tunisia. Along the route, rebel fighters have already driven into Sabratha and Salman, two towns some 60 kilometers west of Tripoli. But the east of Zawiyah is still controlled by government forces.

Ahmed Bani, Spokesman of Libyan Rebel Military, said, "Frankly speaking, on the route from Zawiyah to the western border, we have only occupied some townships. Some areas are still under government control."

On the eastern front, Libyan rebels claim they have taken control of two of the three residential districts in Brega and are now fighting with Gaddafi forces for the industrial area.

But Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim says that Gaddafi is in complete control of both Zawiyah and Brega. The rebels have dismissed the claim as a lie.

He said, "For the current situation in Brega; we are controlling the 2nd and 3rd residential districts. We are fighting to liberate the industrial district where the oil refinery, petrochemical factory and the port are located. The latest developments in this area will be clarified as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, a NATO military spokesman says the rebels have made the most significant gains in months, but the situation on the frontline remains uncertain.
