08-04-2011 10:53 BJT

The Selected Works of Jiang Zemin, former Chinese President and General
Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC),
will be distributed to the country's bookstores on Thursday.

The publishing of selected works of former President Jiang Zemin will help the country and Party achieve the goal of building a better-off and modernized society, according to the People's Daily.

As the three-volume publication began to be distributed to bookstores nationwide yesterday, the People's Daily acclaimed the works of Jiang, also former General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and former Chairman of the Central Military Commission, as a new valuable addition to the treasure house of the Party's guiding theories.

The People's Daily, in a news article and editorial, summarized and commented on those works, the historical events attached to them, and their historical implications. Jiang's works, the editorial said, will serve as a powerful weapon for steering the study of the important thought of the Three Represents and the building of socialism in line with the country's realities; it is also a great spiritual power inspiring the Party and the Chinese people to push forward in building an overall well-off society in the coming decades.

The article said those selected works by Jiang cover a wide range of topics, including international relations, Party construction, economic restructuring, income distribution, rural economy, reform of State-owned enterprises, scientific innovation, development of the western regions, sustainable development, common prosperity, socialist democracy, rule of law, the system of people's congress, human rights, ethnic groups and religion, spiritual civilization, social security and welfare of the disabled, to name but a few.

They testify to Jiang's great talent, political vision and outstanding leadership, the article said.

The editorial hailed the publishing of Jiang's works as a significant event, highly expected by the Party as a whole and all the Chinese people.

The editorial highlighted the importance of the Three Represents theory, which was initiated by Jiang as the core of the third-generation CPC leadership. The theory suggests that the Party must always represent the development requirements of China's advanced social productive forces, the progressive course of China's advanced culture, and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people.

The theory is an integral part of the Party's theoretical guidelines and marks its readiness to advance with the times, the editorial said. As the collective wisdom of the Party, the theory is a creative innovation and Jiang has contributed greatly to its creation, said the editorial.

Jiang and other members of the Party leadership have steered the country in the right direction despite the complicated domestic and international environment. He led the initiatives to launch a series of reforms on multiple fronts, including political, economic, cultural and other systemic reforms to push the material, political and spiritual civilizations, said the editorial.

The publication of the book will further encourage the people to study the Three Represents, the editorial predicted.

Comprising 203 articles since 1980, the works are a truthful record of the country's history of reform and opening up and its modernization drive. The events recorded in the articles indicate that the Party can handle in a mature and composed manner those domestic and international emergencies that concern our sovereignty and security, the editorial said. It can lead the nation to face squarely and subdue the difficulties that arise from political and economic incidents and natural calamities. In this way, it has steered the cause of reform and opening up and the modernization drive towards the right direction.

It can be seen from Jiang's works that the Party has upheld its guiding principles and respected the reality and the needs of the public in its efforts to build socialism with Chinese characteristics, the editorial said. It has put forward a series of innovative thoughts and viewpoints regarding how to push reform and development while maintaining social stability as well as in the fields of foreign relations, national defence, Party and army construction. They have formed a whole new theoretical framework, according to the editorial.

The selected works show, the editorial said, that Jiang has made a tremendous contribution to the maintenance and development of the Party's framework of basic theories, guidelines and experiences. Especially, the editorial said, the Three Represents theory has, on the basis of Deng Xiaoping Theory, given creative answers to questions of what is socialism, how to construct socialism and how to promote Party work. Those thoughts are combined to deepen people's understanding of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

New times demand new theories to better direct our practical work, said the editorial. The fundamental goal of the publication of Jiang's works is to better unite people of all ethnic groups around the Party to push our socialist cause. The editorial called on the people to learn from the works to further their work.

Through the study, the Chinese people will be closely united around the CPC Central Committee, with Hu Jintao as General Secretary, to seek a new development mode centred on the concept of "people first," scientific development, social harmony, new socialism in the countryside, innovation and keeping the advances of Party members.

A Party that advances with the times is set to be one that is good at theoretical innovation, and a Party with bold, innovative ideas is bound to become one of vitality, the editorial said, predicting that the nation will be inspired to achieve the great national rejuvenation.
