With an altitude of over 4000 meters, the Tibet Autonomous Region is usually covered with snow during the winter. The oxygen content is 60 percent less than flat lands, some further below. Because of their unique geographical conditions, daily necessities during winter are usually in great shortage, posing difficulties for millions of Tibetan residents.
Today China´s major transport lines are conducting an operation to deliver winter supplies to Tibetan residents. CCTV-NEWS brings you the live footage from on the highway.

The Ngari Prefecture, in northwestern Tibet, experiences severe geographical conditions during winter. The cold months cover the area with snow from September to May. The oxygen content is 60 percent less than most flat lands. The Local government struggles in the winter months to get necessities to Ngari residents.

Top priority to ensure winter supplies


Thanks to a variety of transporting options, supplies across from the country and overseas are plentiful. Before, transporting supplies to Tibet were mainly done through aircrafts. Now, most transport is done through railways and highways. These include the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, Qinghai-Tibet Highway, and Sichuan-Tibet Highway.

Transporting liquefied natural gas to Tibet starts

The transportation of natural gas to Tibet starts in Golmud in the northwestern Qinghai province. There, natural gas is liquefied and readied for transport.

Winter supplies are being delivered to Tibetans by road and rail. Two of China’s main highways will see the most cargo-carrying traffic - the Sichuan and Xinjiang routes into the autonomous region, as well as the Qinghai-Tibet train link.

The bridge over the roaring Nujiang River is the most dangerous along the Sichuan-Tibet highway. But the road is a vital link for the Tibetan people.

Waters roar 150 meters below while cliffs - soaring 1,000 meters high - cut off light for all but a few hours every day. Then there are the erratic temperatures - with swings of up to 40 degrees over a single day. Oxygen is scarce too - only half of that at sea level.
